Bartosz Józef Kownacki is an eminent Polish lawyer and politician who is the Secretary of State in the Ministry of National Defence. He is also a Member of the Sejm, the main chamber of the Parliament of the Republic of Poland.
Minister Kownacki is the grandson of a Home Army (Armia Krajowa) soldier. In 2003 he graduated from the Faculty of Law and Administration of the University of Warsaw. From 2003 to 2006 he served a prosecutor's apprenticeship at the Public Prosecutors Office for Appeals in Warsaw, and subsequently was included on the list of legal advisers. From 2000 to 2005 Minister Kownacki was an assistant to former Prime Minister Jan Olszewski. From 2006 to 2007 he worked in the Military Counterintelligence Service, and was a member of the Verification Commission of the Military Information Services. During the presidency of Lech Kaczyński, Minister Kownacki worked in the Chancellery of the President of Poland. From 2009 he managed his own law firm. In 2011 he was first elected as a Member of the Sejm of Poland. He served as the Vice Chairman of the National Defence Committee of the Sejm. From 2011 to 2012 Minister Kownacki was a delegate to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly. In the 2015 parliamentary elections, he was reelected as a Member of the Sejm.
He is a recipient of the Gold Cross of Merit, awarded by President Lech Kaczyński.
