Minister Szatkowski had talks, among others, with Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs Mr. Robert Karem, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for European and NATO Policy Mr. Thomas Goffus and with Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Strategy & Force Development Mr. Elbridge Colby. The talks dealt with further deepening of defence cooperation both in bilateral dimension and within NATO.
The importance of strengthening of deterrence and defence capabilities of Poland and NATO’s Eastern Flank through the American involvement for reinforcing the European security, including current and increasing presence of the United States Armed Forces in Poland, was emphasized. Other issues covered the implementation of the decisions taken during NATO Summit in Warsaw as well as further adaptation of the Alliance to the changing security situation.
The involvement of Poland and the United States in international operations and missions was also discussed. Important topics of the discussion were: the meeting between the Minister of National Defence of the Republic of Poland, Mr. Antoni Macierewicz, and the US Secretary of Defence, Mr. James Mattis, which is to take place next week in Brussels, as well as the forthcoming visit of the President of the United States, Mr. Donald J. Trump in Poland.
The consultations of the Undersecretary of State Mr. Szatkowski included also the plans of comprehensive development of Poland’s defence capabilities based on the recently concluded Strategic Defence Review. As Minister Szatkowski said: “I have to emphasize that the results coming from the review of Poland’s strategic defence concept are supplementary with the way the new Administration in Pentagon thinks.” He also added that the interlocutors appreciated the pressure “which the authors of the Strategic Defense Review of the Republic of Poland put on Article 3 of the North Atlantic Treaty, which states that the sides will support and develop both their individual and collective capability to resist any armed assault”.
In this context, the Viceminister talked about Polish plans of developing our own capability of territorial defence. The new Defence Concept of the Republic of Poland, along with Polish regional initiatives such as the Three Seas Concept, were discussed by Mr. Tomasz Szatkowski during a meeting with the experts and analysts in the Washington office of the German Marshall Fund.
