Meeting with the Chief of Defense of the United Kingdom
The talks concerned the prospects for bilateral cooperation within NATO and the EU between Great Britain and Poland, the exchange of allied information, the fight against terrorism, the cooperation in building defense abilities in Iraq, the NATO command structure and strategic communication.
The British side expressed its appreciation for the publicly announced results of the Strategic Defense Review prepared by the Ministry of Defense.
Minister Macierewicz thanked for the British military presence in the NATO Battle Battalion Group stationed in Poland as part of the enhanced presence of NATO (EFP), and underlined the importance of Poland as a key state for the maintenance of NATO's eastern flank. He also assessed the cooperation with Great Britain in terms of support for reforms in Ukraine as good.
Both speakers considered the need to strengthen the Alliance's institutions and reform its command system. They also agreed that the development of the Common Security and Defense Policy of the EU cannot mean the emergence of a two-speed Europe in the field of defense.
The meeting was also attended by the Chief of General Staff of the Polish Armed Forces LtGen Leszek Surawski.
